Polestar Music Management

Polestar Ethos

Polestar Management will never take on a band just to add to a roster. It is as important for the band as for management that both parties understand what is at stake and what the role is.

Does my band need a manager?

Appointing a manager is one of the most important decisions a band can make. A good one can do wonders for you, a bad one can cause you problems and cost you money. So how can you find one that’s right for you?

Ask for recommendations from bands already on a management roster - what kind of deal do they have, is it value for money, what has the manager done for them or is expected to do? Also check how many bands are on their roster - if they have a high number, will they realistically have time and focus to be able to do what you want them to do for YOUR band? If you know a band has left a roster, what caused them to do so? ASK QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU MAKE A DECISION!

Managers work on a percentage of income generated (usually 10-20%) or a flat fee. The former option encourages them to work harder for you, but the latter may also work if it is a consultancy type arrangement. Be sure of what you’re committing to before you do it.

If you DO decide to appoint someone, ask for a trial period to make sure you are both happy with each other. Any decent manager should be happy to offer this. If you decide to proceed with a working relationship, how long is the contract for? Is there a break clause and when? Will it cost you anything

What is it a manager can do for you that you can’t do yourself? If the answer is nothing, then you don’t need a manager yet!

Many bands don’t actually need a manager and can do the job themselves - it’s only when you get to a stage that you feel that you have either hit a ceiling, or you need things that are beyond your reach or experience that you MAY need someone else to come on board.

We never advertise for bands but we will ONLY take one on if we genuinely think we can help them move forward and they have a plan in place themselves to enable us to help them. If you’re not willing to put in at least as much effort to your future as we are, then we won’t be working together I’m afraid!

As management, we expect you to know what you want to achieve over the coming year, have an idea of how you will achieve it (be realistic!) and have the finances in place to do it.

Lastly, although managers CAN book gigs, they are NOT glorified booking agents - don’t treat them as such, they do a lot more than that!

If you have read this far then thank you and we hope you’ve learned at least something useful - if not, and you still have questions, then we will be happy to answer them if we can. Good luck!

Are you any good?

That's not really for us to say - ask our bands what they think! One of the best ways to find the team that's right for you is to have a look at the bands who are doing what you would like to be doing and ask them who they are working with - we certainly won't suit EVERY band out there, but we do work VERY hard on behalf of the ones that we have!

The team...

We have a small permanant team and collaborate closely with others when needed - agents, web designers, copywriters, event organisers and promoters. We have developed great relationships up and down the supply chain and bring this to bear in everything we do for our bands.

We offer specialist expertise in band management and all associated activities. The team all have a keen interest in music, and have a good background in most areas, particularly rock and metal.

TESTIMONIALS

“If you are looking for a professional and well run organisation then look no further than Mark and his team at Polestar. From the outset Mark puts you at ease and ensures that you have the best of working conditions and know exactly what is expected from the task at hand whilst ensuring that you are well looked after and have access to immediate clear instruction and clarification should you need it. Polestar are a joy to work for and many an organisation could learn from the manner Mark and his team conduct themselves".

Gavin Ross (Concert Photographer)

“Our band Brora Wolf have worked with Mark and the Polestar team twice and both have been fantastic experiences. The effort they put in for their bands is exceptional and their professional approach is highly recommended - we would love to work with them once again!”

Chris MacMillan (Brora Wolf)

Working with Mark and Polestar Management as part of the Stormbreakers competition was an absolute pleasure for us. Professional, helpful and fully invested in the bands that he represents.

Cass King (Tomorrow Is Lost)

In the few months that Everyday Heroes have been working with Polestar we have been delighted with the partnership. Mark, Colin and Suzy have been a breath of fresh air in an industry where it's all too common to pay a fortune to managers with very little or no return on that investment. Polestar are fully invested in their bands and we feel that we've already taken some very noticeable strides forward in such a short space of time.”

Luke Phillips (Everyday Heroes)
